What is Folic Acid?
Folic Acid is also known as Vitamin B9.
Folic acid = manufactured and more easily absorbed by the body where it is converted into its natural state called Folate. For all intensive purposes, folic acid and folate are equivocal.

Some of the most important uses of folic acid in your body include:
Making red blood cells
Brain cells
Make 2 of the 4 sub components that make up DNA, or the genetic material within all of your cells in your body
When Is It Used as a Supplement?
Not typically recommended as most individuals with a well rounded diet get enough from the food alone. It’s primarily seen in pregnant women and it’s recommended to take both before and during pregnancy.
Why is it important for pregnant women to take?
During this time there are LOTS of cells being made (creating another human..) and therefore LOTS of folic acid is required
Helps the baby's brain and spinal cord develop without any problems
Without folic acid: things don't develop properly within the baby. These things can manifest themselves in several ways
Neural Tube Defects - malformation of the spinal cord and and brain
Cleft lip/palate
Atrial Septal Defect - small hole in the heart between the L and R upper chambers because
Anemia (too few RBCs) and not enough oxygen to help support the baby
